How to Prevent Split Ends
Split ends can make hair look dull and make it harder to grow. Fortunately, you can take some simple steps to prevent most of them. Here are some tips.
The best way to avoid split ends is to get your hair trimmed every six to eight weeks. Your stylist can snip off split ends before they have a chance to move higher into your hair. Don’t try to trim your own hair with craft or kitchen scissors because they can fray your hair and cause even more split ends.
When you wash your hair, massage the shampoo into the roots. Apply conditioner only to the ends and leave it in for a few minutes before rinsing it out. Don’t put conditioner directly on your roots because that can make your hair greasy.
Treating your hair with a hair mask occasionally can lock in moisture and prevent split ends. You can buy a hair mask or create your own with a recipe you can find online. Use it every other week to improve your hair’s strength, softness, and shine.
Wet hair is more susceptible to breakage than dry hair, and a brush can be too harsh. After you get out of the shower, use a wide-tooth comb to gently remove tangles.
Over-styling hair with heat, either by blow-drying, curling, or straightening, can cause damage and split ends. You don’t need to avoid heat altogether, but you should limit it and use a heat protectant spray. Let your hair air-dry whenever possible. Hot water can strip hair of moisture, so rinse your hair with cool water.
If you like to wear your hair up, using a very tight rubber band can cause breakage and split ends. Use a softer tie when you put your hair up.
