Changing your hair color is the easiest way to change your appearance, but it can be tough to choose the right shade. Here are some tips to help you decide.

The most important factor to consider when choosing a new hair color is your skin tone. If you have olive skin, you should go with a darker hair color. For pink skin, choose an ash tone and avoid warm red or golden blonde. Pale skin suits almost any hair color, but if you have very pale skin, do not choose a dark hair color because it can make you look even paler and older. If you have darker skin, a bright color can be flattering, while a softer hair color can make you appear washed-out. If your skin has yellow hues, choose a deep red or dark brown.

Your hair color should compliment your eye color. If your eyes are brown, green, or hazel, choose a warm tone such as red, gold, or auburn. If you have blue or gray eyes, choose a cooler hair color, such as light gold or ash.

Knowing what colors of clothing look best on you will also help you choose the right hair color. If you look good in red, orange, golden yellow, olive green, or rust, choose a warm hair color such as golden blonde, golden brown, strawberry blonde, or auburn. If clothing in bluish red, fuchsia, black, royal blue, or pine green suits you, choose a cool hair color such as platinum, ash blonde, ash brown, burgundy, or black. If you look good in clothes that are red, purple, charcoal gray, periwinkle, or teal, choose a neutral hair color such as sandy blonde, beige blonde, chocolate brown, or mahogany.

Another clue to your skin tone is the type of jewelry that looks best on you. If you look good in silver, you have cool skin. If gold looks better on you, you have warm skin. If you look good in both, you have a neutral skin tone.

Brown is a good color choice if your hair is naturally mousy brown, your hair is damaged, or you want minimal maintenance.

Red hair can look good on nearly anyone. If you have cool or pink skin, try a darker cold red or a purple-red. If you have golden or olive skin, try a dark natural auburn or dark red-brown. If your skin is very pale, any shade of red can be flattering as long as it matches your undertone. If you have a medium or dark skin tone, a bright red could suit you. You should only choose red if your hair is in good condition. Damaged hair that is dyed red will fade.

Blonde is a good choice if you had blonde hair as a child. If you have a warmer skin tone, choose a golden blonde. If you have a cooler skin tone, you should go with a cold ash color. If you have a neutral undertone, you can use any shade of blonde. Blonde is an expensive color to maintain because it requires frequent touch-ups and toning products.

Black is a good choice if you have darker skin. Be absolutely sure that you want black. If you change your mind, it will be nearly impossible to dye your hair back to its natural color without damaging it.

Silver and white are bold colors that can look stunning on someone who has very pale skin with cool undertones or very dark cool-toned skin. Silver and white require more maintenance than other hair colors. The strong dye can damage your hair, so you should not choose one of these colors unless your hair is in very good condition.
